Hi Jonathon, and thank you for being with us today at Planet Singer! We are very excited about the release of your second album, and we are thrilled to know more about you and your artistic journey, so let’s start from the very beginning. When did you discover your passion for music?
I’d say there have been moments in my life where music really hit me in different ways, in which I hadn’t experienced before. I remember a moment before going to high school listening to ‘Kid A’ by Radiohead, and listening to the song “Kid A”, where the beats get really quiet and this synth just swells, and brought me so into the moment. That was definitely an introduction to electronic music. Or, while first listening to Talk Talk’s “Laughing Stock”. Such a beautiful album.
Your upcoming album will be available from December 25th, 2023; can you tell us more about this project?
Yes. I’ve been working on this project on and off, for a couple of years. The album is called ‘Isolophobia’. It’s a bit darker and more electronic than anything else I’ve worked on previously. I limited myself to working with certain hardware and musical equipment. So it’s all connected in that sense. For example, my analog Arturia drum brute drum machine.
Your songwriting is pretty unique, and from your previous release, we can see how refined and intense your music approach is. I would love to ask, what’s your creative process? How does your music come to life?
Usually, it comes through just hearing a melody or a drum pattern in my head, and then after picking that up – applying it to recording and filling up the space with different instruments. For this next album, it would be even just a line or riff… I would just follow it and see where it goes.
Your main love is for the guitar, but you also like to explore other instruments such as the piano, drums, and bass. This is so important for your artistic richness and it shows in your recordings. How important is it to you to be able to express yourself by exploring new soundscapes and musical points of view?
Expressing myself in general is very important to me. Music is something that I know I will continue to pursue no matter who is listening to it. It starts there. You have to enjoy what you do. That should be what keeps you going! As far as exploring new soundscapes… I’ve had to change my approach for this album compared to my last album. This was intentional, as I was trying to find room to grow.
Your previous album “Blind!” was released in 2021, many things happened in the past years. Do you think your new release will follow the path of your previous record or will it be a completely new chapter of your journey?
Definitely a new chapter. I think this album will make more sense to people (haha). It is somewhat personal, but at the same time, it is maybe vague enough for others to create their own meaning!

And talking about the journey, we also noted how your songs focus on the narrative. Songs like “Blind” and “(Don’t) Step Away”, to name a few, go straight to the heart of the listeners. How important is it to you to write songs that connect on a personal level with your listeners?
As mentioned before, I don’t worry too much about how a song may connect with listeners. I have so much more faith in a song if it has hit me in some sort of way. Then I know someone out there will feel that too.
Are you planning any live shows in support of the new album?
I’m planning on doing a West Coast tour… more info on that soon.
You release the single “Dark and Blue,” an excellent track with such a powerful, intense, and unique sound. Can you tell us more about this song? Will it be included in the new album?
Yes, this will be the third song on the album. Funny enough, in its early stages I almost discarded this song. But it has turned into one of my favourites! The thing that made it for me were the synth sounds I was able to get out of my Prophet 6.
Where do you find your inspiration?
For this album artists such as: James Blake, Gotye, Caribou, Thom Yorke, Modeselektor, Jesse Lanza, and others were influences. Mostly Artists that create electronic music with vocals…I also like the DIY idea like how Grimes used to create her music. Especially ‘Visions’ and ‘Art Angels’.
You collaborate with excellent musicians, and if you could collaborate with one of those artists who inspired you and your artistic journey, who would you like to share a song and the stage with?
Any of the above-mentioned probably!

“The Trick” is another brilliant release that anticipates the new record. What’s the story behind this song?
Hmm… well I think it started with the main arpeggio “Riff” and then I approached it like a Gotye song, Vocal-Wise. I even reference one of his albums/lyrics in it. Then it ended up turning into a Rave song to some extent. So that was cool.
What are your plans for the future?
Keep an eye out for more music before the album release, and then a West Coast tour promoting the album.
